Sweet?

Sister's Mortensen's mission is sweet--at least most of the time! Here's her latest mission update!

I wish I could send smells in the mail. The stench of this City is rather incredible. It's cow sweat, crap, pee, and blood all wrapped up. It supersedes just smell--it's a taste! Thankfully it's better or worse depending where you are in town and what time of day it is. These pictures are us on our way to Montezuma. The sign said it was a "scenic overlook"

This is one big windmill!
We have FIVE new investigators this week! We were looking for a Less Active and instead met a teenage girl on the porch. we asked if she would be interested in learning and she said yes and we asked if her family would be too and she said yes. So we came back and although the girl wasn't there we met the mom and the brother. And they were interested in learning and are so excited to come to church when the mom can get Sundays off of work. So exciting! They even called to reschedule when they found our next appointment wouldn't work. I don't like it when people cancel but I love it when they call to do it! It really means something when they take note of when you'll be back.

The other two new investigators are incredible! About three weeks ago we got a referral from online to meet a man and woman at the church for a church tour. We waited and waited and no one showed. WELL this last Sunday a couple walked into church and the man was drenched with sweat. We spoke with them and found out that this couple was who we were supposed to have met three weeks ago. We just missed each other somehow. The couple had started walking at 8 am to be at church by 10 am. They had been chatting with someone on the church website for a few weeks. The man had read the Book of Mormon twice and the Kings James Bible five times. They've studied both of them and know they are true. They want to be baptized so badly and they want a copy of Doctrine and Covenants. They don't want to just go to church and sit in the pew- they want to be actively involved. THEY CAME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!! After talking with them for about an hour after church I extended a wonderful baptismal invite- "So you really want to be baptized?" "yes" "How does the 28th of this month sound?" "we can do that" we are so excited! We will be meeting with them this week to go through the discussions.

We went biking this week—thankfully it was only one day although it was because one of the Elders we share the car with wasn't feeling well so we got the car back. We biked from our home to a home far away. It was pretty warm but not one of the blistering hot days we've been having. By the time we got there—despite us taking it slow—our faces were pretty red. We were welcomed into the home a recent convert and given water and ice. We visited with the woman for a while and shared a message with her. She sees our visits as opportunities to practice her English which is pretty good, but she's also teaching us Spanish by way of Simon Says. It's fun and she is really a sweetheart. The people here are really so kind.

We got some furniture Thursday and Friday so our apartment is almost complete. We tried to salvage some furniture from the recently emptied apartment the elders were transferred from. We took the good stuff, but as we were bringing a desk and kitchen table into our apartment they fell apart. So we are slowly planning on fixing them. Until then we study and eat on the floor, but we're happy.

  1. About closest I can think of your opening paragraph in this blog is I-5 near Coalinga,CA. Great week for you. So happy you are having a great mission. I can also relate to your last paragraph. All I can say is "Elmer's Glue" and lots of it. Our kitchen table moves when we sit to eat at it. Someone carved "Elder" into it. Thank goodness for tablecloths and there was a recliner in our apartment when we got here. We would have thrown it out then but I need a recliner to keep my feet up so we moved it to the spare bedroom where no one can see it but us. You will get to move several times in your mission experience and hopefully at least a few better furnished apartments. God bless.
